Inclusive large play structure
Every day, more than 500 children rely on our playground as a place to be active, build friendships, and explore through play. It is a vital part of their school experience and overall well-being.
Our playground also serves as a central gathering space for families in Strathcona Park, Coach Hill, Patterson Heights, and Christie Park—bringing together children and neighbours for connection, recreation, and community life.
However, the current playground does not meet the needs of all of our students. Barriers like pea gravel surfacing limit access and participation for many children, preventing them from fully engaging in play alongside their peers.
Why this project matters Who’s involved
Playground equipment that is aging and nearing the end of its lifespan will be replaced, and the entire play surface will be upgraded with durable recycled rubber surfacing.
No. This project is a revitalization of our existing playground, not a full replacement.
Only specific pieces of play equipment that have been identified as nearing the end of their lifespan will be replaced. In addition, the project includes upgrading the surfacing to a recycled rubber safety surface, helping improve accessibility, safety, and long-term durability of the play area
Students will share ideas through classroom-based activities, and their feedback will help guide the final design of the playground.
Students will also have opportunities to contribute to the project in other meaningful ways, including sharing fundraising ideas and, where appropriate, taking part in or organizing small initiatives to support the playground revitalization. This may include activities such as bottle drives, lemonade stands, or other creative fundraising efforts led by classes, groups, or families.
Families can donate, volunteer, participate in fundraisers, or help connect us with grants and sponsorship opportunities.
Yes. Online donations made through our partnership with the Parks Foundation Calgary are eligible for a tax receipt. Cheque donations of $100 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
Our goal is to begin construction in June 2027 and have the revitalized playground ready for students when school resumes in Fall 2027.
The project is led by the Olympic Heights School Parents Association in collaboration with school staff, families, students, and community partners. The project also follows Calgary Board of Education processes for capital project approval and delivery.
