Why this project matters

This project focuses on revitalizing our existing playground to better serve students of all ages and abilities.

The upgrades will include:

  • Replacement of selected play equipment nearing the end of its lifespan
  • Installation of a new recycled rubber safety surface for improved accessibility and durability
  • Enhancements that support inclusive and safe play for all children

This revitalization will extend the life of the playground while creating a safer, more accessible, and more engaging play environment.

A Community-Driven Need

This project has been shaped by consultations with our school community, including students, parents, staff, and individuals with disabilities. Through this process, one issue was consistently identified: the pea gravel surface is the most significant barrier to access.

The loose material makes it difficult—or impossible—for some children and caregivers to enter and move safely within the play area. It creates unstable conditions for those with mobility challenges and limits independence and participation for many users.

Students themselves have identified improving the playground as a priority. In response, the Olympic Heights School Parents Association is leading this initiative to create a space where all students can fully participate.

Just a comment for safe keeping that I think we can do more engagement and probably should as part of this call for support.

Expanding the Vision

Originally, the project focused on replacing the pea gravel with accessible rubber surfacing. Rubber offers a smooth, durable, and low-maintenance alternative that enhances fall safety, promotes cleanliness, and is fully wheelchair-accessible.

However, after careful evaluation by the Calgary Board of Education, it was determined that some playground equipment is nearing the end of its lifespan and may require replacement within the next 5–8 years. Replacing only the surfacing now—and then doing it again later when the equipment is upgraded—would be inefficient and costly.
For this reason, we have expanded the scope of the project to include both surfacing and key equipment upgrades as part of one coordinated effort.

This approach allows us to:

  • Maximize the lifespan of the entire playground
  • Minimize future disruptions and costs
  • Deliver a cohesive, well-designed space
  • Launch a single capital fundraising campaign to achieve the best possible outcome
